The upazilas of Lalmonirhat district were formerly under Rangpur district and part of Phulbari upazila of Kurigram district. In 1979, Lalmonirhat subdivision was first established with four thanas of Rangpur district and part of Phulbari thana of Kurigram district. When Lalmonirhat subdivision was upgraded to a district in 1984, the Lalmonirhat District and Sessions Judge Court was established. When the judicial branch was separated from the executive branch in 2007, the Lalmonirhat Chief Judicial Magistrate Court was established.
